History & Custom Build

Abrigo Home originated from Amy Dutton Home. Our Founder Amy Dutton’s first job in design was at Bruce Gregga Interiors in Chicago upon graduating from DePauw College in 1988. The firm was divided equally between architects and interior designers, which inspired Amy’s great appreciation for the balance between the two practices. Upon moving to Maine in 1993, Amy quickly learned to add landscaping to her portfolio while working for a number of architecture and interior design firms. In 1998, after welcoming her second child, Elle, and realizing that daycare was a bit too expensive, Amy decided to off on her own and created her own studio. Situated on the front porch (and playroom) of her tiny cape in coastal Maine, Amy spent early mornings and late nights at her drafting table honing her own design aesthetic and developing relationships with clients throughout the area. As her family and children grew, so did her business. In 2007, she purchased that building that Amy Dutton Home and Abrigo Home still operate out of in Kittery, Maine. After twenty-four years of working throughout the Seacoast of New Hampshire and Maine, Amy has worked on over 160 custom projects, developing a clear entrepreneurial approach to working with both builders and homeowners alike.

Our History

Our Founder and Creative Director, Amy Dutton, founded Abrigo Home in 2022 as an extension of her design company Amy Dutton Home. At Amy Dutton Home, Amy works directly with clients on custom home renovations and new construction projects. Due to the labor shortages, supply-chain delays, increasing housing costs we’ve seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, custom architectural / interior design studios such as ours aren’t able to keep up. As a solution, Amy conceived Abrigo Home to expand many of our current design offerings – home plans, interior finish and material solutions, and one-on-one consultation time – to a wider audience. We hope Abrigo Home will allow our customers to create a living environment that reflects your sustainable lifestyle within process and budget parameters that you can control.

Price is the biggest consideration. At Abrigo Home, we offer home plans ranging from $4,400 to $10,000. The lower end includes a full construction drawing set, with your preferred add-ons increasing the price. Amy Dutton Home’s design services alone typically cost between $30,000 to $50,000 per client. This figure varies depending on the scope of the project, timeline, and level of Amy’s involvement.

We’re happy to collaborate with you to ensure that the home plan you purchase meets your expectations and specific needs. There are, however, a few aspects that cannot be changed in order to maintain structural integrity and compliance with building regulations. Specifics can be found in the description of each home plan listed on our site. Generally, will not change the staircase location, roofline, or footprint of a home plan. Changing interior walls, bathroom layouts, cabinetry, and more to better meet your needs is completely attainable. Plans can also be flipped for the price of $200 (billed separately).

Yes! The rate for this service is $300/hour, and we’re happy to provide a cost estimate following an initial consultation. The process is much simpler when clients can provide the CAD or DWG files for the home plan. If you only have PDFs, it’s important to understand that we essentially need to digitally rebuild the design within our CAD software to make edits from there. Ultimately, we find that it can be more cost- and time-efficient to draw a completely custom home from the get-go for those customers.

As an architectural designer, Amy sends all completed custom home plans to your hired structural engineer to be stamped for approval. This ensures that the design adheres to all local building codes and structural requirements before construction begins.

We are happy to price out each material we’ve specified in our interior design package and find alternative options based on your budget or allowances from your builder. Some items, such as countertops or cabinets, will need to be sent to a local fabrication company for quotes, which is a process that we have limited ability to assist with. Based on your specific home plan, the quantities that you need to order will change. The best option is to send the interior design package to your builder and have them assist you with calculating quantities.

Our Process

We offer two-hour, on-site consultations for $650. You can schedule this consultation time directly on our website.

While we do have a showroom located in Kittery, Maine, we do not offer any in-person meetings at this time.

Yes! You can book a consultation in one-hour increments. You’ll be able to meet virtually with Amy to discuss any of your ideas, questions, or concerns. We also offer free 15-minute video calls for brief introductions.

There are two common ways in which designers typically bill clients, requiring either lump sum or hourly payments. At Abrigo Home, we’ve found that charging an hourly rate and billing at the end of each month is the most effective. We are always respectful of your budget, and will provide an estimate based on your specific project.
