Design Trends
Do you focus on design trends? Abrigo Home wants to be creative and put products together in an inspiring way. But, unfortunately, we are all subject to what the manufacturers and vendors supply.
Tile has come a long way, with porcelain being able to replicate other materials yet still outperform them. For example, in 1904, the subway tile was introduced to create a clean and modern look for the subway system and gained back its popularity in 2010. Manufactured in different colors, textures, materials, and shapes, we can install them stacked or vertically for a newer, modern, fresh appeal or horizontally for the traditional look.
Lighting is an aspect that our custom house design business, Amy Dutton Home, strongly encourages clients to consider deeply before purchasing. We love the 1970s mid-century modern era with a twist. Most people know the pendant light with a chain and stained glass from the 1980s or the bright brass chandelier from the 1990s. Our point is that lighting “dates” your home, so be careful to choose the lighting you love regardless of trends.
Flooring materials move throughout your home, from tile to wood to carpet. Now that we’ve moved away from the days of shag carpet to cleaner lines, we can also appreciate our ability to manufacture wider wood planks which simplifies the space quite a bit. For example, White Oak flooring is readily available and can be 5” wide without worrying about buckling, but it can also be as wide as 12” with an engineered wood floor. Wood floors can also be finished in many different tones and textures, allowing you to control the final color of the wood flooring and how it interacts with the other finishes in the space. Tile can be installed in various ways to manage your space’s final look and feel, but at Abrigo Home, we prefer to always run the tile in the direction you walk into the room and, ideally, a â…“ offset.
Siding can range from wood to vinyl or be manufactured as a Hardie product that manufactures both lap plank and vertical siding and shingles. Abrigo Home has found with this product that it’s best to budget in painting after for a better look that will outperform the traditional wood siding.
Windows and Doors also have a way of leaning toward the traditional look. However, with black windows, this looks beautiful with natural wood shakes and light-painted houses.
Color significantly impacts any space primarily used on cabinets, walls, accessories, and furniture. We are finally moving back to color after living with a lot of white and gray being the prominent trend in home design for the last decade. We are never afraid of color, but we find our clients at Amy Dutton Home are hesitant to make such a bold commitment. If this is you, consider an authentic wood cabinet or neutral tone and paint the walls a color, as painting walls is a simple task for an average homeowner to change. Also, wallpaper is a fun way to introduce color and texture into your space. Abrigo Home leans toward colors from nature, such as moss, dark greens, and deep blues that juxtapose neutrals as a beautiful way to create a cozy home.
