We always advise customers and clients to solidify their materials and finishes list at the start of their home design construction project. Most people are so excited when they find and purchase land, but they need to be more educated about what must be done before moving into their homes. It sounds easy enough, but it’s a very complex process.
In this blog, we’ll visit the “big picture” process of the materials list and what is essential about getting it right the first time. We are big believers that everything costs money, so why not spend your money well? These are in the order of how you should select your materials and finishes:
- Exterior – Start with the exterior because these are big numbers, not products you will purchase. Still, your builder needs to know these very early in the process for preliminary pricing. For example, vinyl siding and wood have a significant price difference.
- Appliances – You can use one of our kitchen specifications sheets, which are guaranteed to work together visually and functionally. Do some research and ensure they fit your budget and needs before purchasing. I recommend going into an appliance store and chatting with a salesperson for their final review and budget numbers.
- Plumbing – Start with your sink faucets, then select the shower/tub finish and design to match the sink faucet the fixture uses most frequently.
