Case Study: The Oak Colonial Renovation

ByElle Murphy March 7, 2023August 16, 2023

From a custom architecture and interior design project to a shoppable online home plan product, the Oak Colonial renovation is an actual case study in translating client taste to a broader audience.

This project first came to Amy Dutton Home in 2020 through our partner, Haven Hill Builders. The couple, two busy millennials with two young children, bought the home during the pandemic to gain extra space. Fortunately for ADH, the 1990 Colonial “box” provided the perfect blank canvas for updates and collaboration. Inside, we opened up walls on the first floor for easy family living and made numerous changes throughout the home to materials, finishes, cabinetry, the list goes on… If you browse through the portfolio of our custom company, Amy Dutton Home, you’ll notice some throughlines of our work: functional mudroom and kitchen spaces, sleek bespoke cabinetry, and timeless materials. The Oak Colonial is a perfect encapsulation of how to remain current with trends while maintaining a classic design that will stand the test of time.

We chose to sell the home plans and finish collection of the Oak Colonial on Abrigo Home because we believe it’s a perfectly designed home for any renovator or new construction client looking for a timeless design that feels youthful and fresh. For example, the white zellige tile that you see in the kitchen and bar feels like they’re really having a moment right now – we, at least, see zellige tile ALL OVER our Pinterest. However, the tone of the tile set against the walnut island, white oak flooring, and steel faucet all work together to keep the kitchen feeling cohesive and classic. We’ve included fun lighting and wallpaper that you and your friends might be browsing from Serena & Lily, but have contextualized these choices within spaces that we know the homeowners will love five, or ten years from now.

If you’re interested in replicating the look and feel of the Oak Colonial in your own home, here’s a little teaser of the materials:

If you’re interested in learning about the full material and finish list for the Oak Colonial, check out the Oak Colonial Finish Collection. You can shop by room (perfect if you’re just renovating your kitchen or bathroom), or, you can buy the Whole Home finish collection which includes all product information for the whole house – from exteriors to laundry room to home office. And as always, if you’d like to customize or need help with sourcing anything, reach out to Elle at [email protected]!
